"Wide range of rich colours" – San Diego Story
Robert Schumann's Carnaval, Op. 9 is a programmatic piano masterpiece from 1834–35, made up of 21 short movements portraying masked figures at a carnival. Each movement offers a vivid musical caricature — ranging from real-life acquaintances to imagined personalities, including reflections of Schumann himself. ensemble132's arrangement enhances the work’s kaleidoscopic character through collaborative chamber writing, expanding its colours and interplay.
The program also includes our featured season composer Kelly-Marie Murphy's Four Degrees of Freedom, a dynamic contemporary work exploring gesture, motion, and transformation with rhythmic drive and striking clarity.
The program culminates with Johannes Brahms' Piano Quartet in C minor, Op. 60 — Piano Quartet in C minor, Op. 60 — a deeply expressive and turbulent Romantic work, balancing intensity with moments of lyric beauty.
